to-gather bench

one holland village design competition (top 10 entry)

inspired by its spirit of place, the bench’s profile is a transliteration of the unique crescent-shaped figure ground surrounding Lorong Mambong. It is further abstracted into a series of planes at varying heights, referencing the streets’ sloping topography. Its resulting form resembles a mini amphitheatre of sorts; an open invitation to gather. We imagine it will, in its life, foster the community to mingle as it enables and supports a multitude of different uses, and eventually becomes an integral, well-used piece of communal furniture in the village.

From its early beginnings as an open air cinema, to its present state as a cradle of social activities, this bench aspires to stay true to the genius loci of Holland Village’s vibrant streets to converge its community for rest and recreation.
